Slower…Faster…Slower…Faster

President Obama pledged during his campaign to repeal Don’t ask, Don’t tell, but lately he has been showing quite a bit of caution on this topic. The Boston Globe reported that he would be taking it slow, only to have a follow-up commentary the next day urging the president to get on with it and let us serve. Commentary also came from Aubrey Sarvis, director of Servicemembers Legal Defense Network and retired USMC Brigadier General Hugh Aitken. Of all the commentaries, My favorite was BG Aitken’s:

Creating a new study will not change the facts.

Well said.

The only thing that comes to my mind right now when it comes to B.O. and DADT is here’s a Commander In Chief who wants to make absolutely sure he doesn’t commit the same mistake Bill Clinton did back in 1993. Not that I’m trying to defend his actions, but not matter how much political capital he may have right now…he wants everybody, especially the Republicans and DOD, to be ok with repeal and allow gays to serve openly. Right now I think the one item that can work to our favor is for the issue of DADT to keep being published in any media outlet. Things are different now than what they were 16 years ago. We’ve seen in several polls already that more and more people are ok with repeal. I personally prefer to see this go slowly but surely than to act fast and gamble with it. One thing’s for sure, and this is no lie…Barack Obama is NO Bill Clinton. But then again I may be wrong. Only time will tell.

    Felix,

Weren’t you in the Air Force when Don’t ask, Don’t tell was enacted? Would you care to share some of what you remember about those days?
