I’ve written about Texas Senator John Cornyn before. In particular I like to highlight about how his brand of “compassionate conservatism” is just repackaged liberalism. Well, I found this article from The Hill pretty interesting.
Cornyn sticks to his message despite decline in polls, tough times for GOP
It seems his popularity and chances of reelection have been slipping in the polls over the past few weeks.
At the same time, the Lone Star State may not be the GOP stronghold it was back when he was first elected.
I think the views of most Texans are taken for granted by the politicians. Most of the Texans I know are pretty independent-minded. I think the GOP has taken the state for granted and Texans may be looking for some changes. Of course, it also depends on how many Texans bother to show up on election day. I also think that a lot of Texans may be loyal to the Republican party, but their personal views may not line up 100% with the party platform and they just might find another party’s candidate to be more in-line with their views. For some that may be Bob Barr and the Libertarian Party, for others they may prefer someone like Chuck Baldwin and the Constitution Party.
And one more selection from the article:
Yet Cornyn may have a more difficult time winning a national security debate against his opponent, a 50-year-old lieutenant colonel in the Texas Army National Guard and a veteran of the U.S. military’s mission in Afghanistan. Noriega, a state representative since 1998, has stuck to Cornyn’s votes against Democratic legislation on healthcare, veterans’ needs, educational priorities, energy and economic bills.
I don’t think military service should be a requirement to become a Senator, but I am sure Sen. Cornyn is going to avoid military issues because Texans are definitely going to give LTC Noriega more credit in that area. It’s going to be an interesting race.
