A Grim Anniversary

Today is a sad day for me. One year ago today, one of my friends and former soldiers was killed in Iraq. There’s no political commentary for this entry. Just take a moment to remember someone you’ve lost. I never want anyone to be forgotten, so I’d like for you all to take the time today and read a little about this man, SGT Eric A. Lill.

(Warning: This may not make sense to you if you weren’t in the field artillery, but you should try anyway.) The first memory I have of Lill was when I was arguing with Gunny Hailey over the proper distance for the aiming poles. Lill had barely been assigned to my section after completing basic and AIT. While Gunny and I argued, we had Lill running back-and-forth aligning and repositioning the aiming poles about thirty times.

The other thing I remember about Lill was his absolutely direct way of letting you know what he thought. He had a pretty strong Chicago accent, and an even stronger attitude. But, for me, I prefer to deal with someone who tells it like it is.

Rest In Peace.

It’s time to bring them home. We’ve done all we can there. We have a powerful armed forces, yet those powers have limits. Regardless, our troops will come back as heroes, and America will treat them with dignity and respect.
