Why Libertarianism is Compassionate

Why Libertarianism is Compassionate

It seems obvious to those of us who already advocate libertarianism, but it never hurts repeating for those who don’t quite understand it yet.

I’ll be honest - I used to be a Democrat. Issues like equality were truly important to me and, frankly, still are. But how do we achieve that equality? And what kind of equality are we looking for anyway? Or what’s the difference between freedom and equality? When I say “equality” does it mean the same thing when you say it? As I started to answer these questions for myself, I started to develop my own ideas about what equality means and how we should go about achieving it. In the end (if you can call it an “end”) I found that my own ideas closely resembled libertarianism.

I continued to be a Democrat for a few years, but voted independently for Democrats, Republicans and Libertarians. Eventually I realized the “big tent” parties were never really adequate for representing the views of their members. The LP has always been different in this respect. In fact, the LP realizes that its members have a wide range of views and celebrates that. The Democratic and Republican parties are, more often than not, machines intended solely to elect their members to office and do not represent a particular philosophy.
