Wonderful news from the island of Cuba: Fidel Castro has resigned as President!
Of course, this news could be more exciting, but for those who follow Cuban politics realize that this is a calculated move by the dictator and not a dramatic shift towards democracy.
Raul, Fidel’s brother, has been leading the nation since last year when Fidel underwent surgery. Raul is more open-minded than Fidel when it comes to democratic reforms.
It seems a lot of Fidel’s staying power has been based on his hatred of the USA and the Cuban exile community of Miami. As Fidel aged, so did the exiles and basically what developed was a war of attrition.
Today most Cuban exiles have lived more of their lives in the USA than in Cuba. There children may or may not have been born here and their grandchildren and great-grandchildren were all born in the USA. Their roots came from Cuba but have been transplanted in the USA. Many of the surviving exiles would love to go back to visit their homeland, but only a few have a desire to resettle.
Only time will tell what awaits Cuba and the Cuban people.
