Students at the University of Havana’s School of Information Sciences asked some difficult questions of Ricardo Alarcon, president of the Cuban Parliament this week.

Freedom is flowering on the island. Fidel is incapacitated and Raul has assumed more power than every before. With rumors Raul may be “family” - at least part time - it’s hardly surprising that the Cuban government has entertained ideas of allowing gays to serve openly in the military and approving gay marriage.
All this is the result of advances in communication technologies and the natural human desire for freedom. Cubans are as curious as the rest of the world and they want to explore it. Alarcon asserts that world travelers are only a small part of society (True), but continues to say that Cubans shouldn’t waste their resources to become part of that small population. For those who don’t get it - he’s telling you to give up on your dreams.
Let’s hope that this questioning continues and that Lady Liberty learns to salsa. (Or cha-cha, or mambo.)
